Elphaba, the Future Wicked witch of the west
Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West) Late pass
The monsters in literature that stick with us through the decades are not the ones that come purely from imagination. The monsters that we write about, think about, and make movies about most are either the monsters that we create or the monsters we become. We are afraid of the part of ourselves that is most like the monsters we fear. One example that supports this idea would be Elphaba the future Wicked Witch of the west. Elphaba is a monster we fear because she represents the part of ourselves that can turn bad.
She created the monster within herself through a series of experiences. She was never liked as she was growing up despite her fierce kindness and loving smile. She was an outcast because of her green skin and opinions. For example, one day while she was in History class, her teacher brought in a lion cub (the future cowardly lion) in a cage. She said that caged animals will never learn to speak and that it would put them in their place. Elphaba found this very unfair and after voicing her opinion and being rejected once again, she stole the lion and set it free. Next, her sister Nessy, accidentally casted a spell on her love interest. He was about to die so the sister summoned Elphaba. The only way that she could save him was by turning him to Tin (tin man). After, the sister hates her because since he doesn't have a heart, he will never love her again. Another example was when Elphaba some showed magical talent while trying to defend her sister. This makes the “Wonderful “ Wizard want to meet her. When she went to see him, he tricked her into helping Him destroy some winged monkeys and turn things into spies for him. She fled the tower with guards pursuing her when Madame Morrible declares loudly to all of Oz that Elphaba is Wicked . They think she is wicked because of what she did to the monkeys, not believing that the wizard would do anything like that. The last example of how she turned into a "monster" was when she was trying to save Fiyero, her true love. He was captured and beaten and tries unsucessfully to save him. Finally she just accepts her title as WICKED.
I think that Elphaba represent the part or side of us that the world thinks we are. She was doing kind things every time and was completely innocent, but the world did not choose to see the goodness in her. Finally after so much, she just began to go along with it. I think it also represents the part of us that is not confident with ourselves. We begin to loose ourselves in the fear of the people around us, then just go along with what everyone says and the fear itself.
We fear this because it happens to us every day. This is just an example of one extreme case that got out of hand. This is scary because unlike a radioactive spiderbite et cetra, this could really happen to any one of us. At the end of the story, she figures out that Fiyero was actually saved and she was able to run away from Oz with him. We can learn from this that we can control what will happen. We also learn that it will most likely turn out okey in the end if you were doing right the whole time.
In conclusion, we fear "monsters" that come from humans because of the reality of it all. It is also scary because it is very real and relatable. We can learn from this "Wicked Witch" that good does come from good works, no matter the trials that we go through.
